Crush Syndrome in Earthquake Country
Apart from direct trauma, complications of crush syndrome are the most frequent cause of death after earthquakes. Up to 40% of multistory building collapse survivors suffer from crush syndrome.

It is estimated that after an earthquake like a 7.0 on the Hayard fault, that up to 2,250 people could be trapped in buildings or buried in rubble awaiting rescue. Some of those people are sure to have sustained crush injury that could lead to crush syndrome.

Here in earthquake country it’s important to know what causes crush syndrome and ways to address the needs of patients in a disaster when normal emergency medical services like EMTs and Paramedics are not available in the field. Medical professionals can only diagnose crush syndrome with lab tests but we can sometimes take steps in the post disaster environment to lessen the impact of this potentially deadly syndrome.
